Event Breakdown

OCR Format: 20+ Obstacles, Trail & Terrain

OCR courses pack climbing, crawling, carrying, and grip work into every few hundred meters. Your race-day plan starts with the obstacles that decide your finish time.

Rope Climb
15 ft rope climb with a knotted or smooth rope. The classic grip and pull-strength test — learn the J-hook and you save seconds every station.
💡 Lock off at the top before ringing the bell — premature transitions cost you the rep
Monkey Bars / Rig
Traverse 20+ feet of horizontal rings, bars, or angled rig attachments. Pure grip endurance with a lats and core stabilizer demand.
💡 Use lats to pull through and never death-grip — swing slightly to recover between transitions
Sandbag Carry
Carry 60–80 lb sandbag over 200–400m of trail. Mix of shoulder carry, bear hug, and overhead depending on the race series.
💡 Switch carry styles every 50m to recruit different muscles and spread fatigue
Wall Traverse
Lateral traverse across an 8 ft wall, hands-only transition on the top edge. No momentum, just lats and forearms.
💡 Keep your hips close to the wall — center of gravity over your hands is the whole game
Spear Throw
Hit a horizontal target with a heavy javelin from 15–25m. The iconic OCR skill — technique beats strength every single time.
💡 High release angle (45°) and smooth follow-through — don't muscle it
Mud Crawls
Crawl under barbed wire, through drainage channels, and under cargo netting 50–100m. Lower back, hips, and grip endurance take a beating.
💡 Stay low and long — knees and elbows never lift off the dirt
Tire Flip
Flip a 400–600 lb tractor tire for distance. Power, technique, and stubbornness — total-body output.
💡 Lift with your legs like a deadlift, push with the hips, one clean flip at a time
Bucket Carry
Fill a 5-gallon bucket with gravel, gravel-to-stones, and carry it 100–300m. Grip, posture, and determination.
💡 Switch arms every 30 seconds and never let the bucket swing — that's wasted energy

FAQ

Common Questions

Quick answers to the questions athletes ask most about OCR races.

What’s the difference between OCR divisions (Sprint, Super, Beast, Ultra)?
Sprint is the shortest at roughly 3–5 km with 15–20 obstacles. Super is the standard at 8–10 km with 25+ obstacles. Beast runs 15–20 km with 30+ obstacles. Ultra is 20 km+ over multi-lap or backcountry courses and is the elite-level standard for Trifecta points.
How long does a typical OCR race take?
Sprint runners finish in 45–75 minutes. Super takes 90 minutes to 3 hours depending on divisions and obstacle attempts. Beast is 3 to 6 hours. Ultra is 5 to 10+ hours and finishes in darkness for most mid-pack runners.
Do I need to qualify to enter an OCR race?
No qualification is needed for Open and Age Group heats. Competitive and Elite heats require submitted qualifying times from a prior race. Spartan Trifecta points accrue automatically for Sprint, Super, and Beast finishes in the same calendar year.
What’s in a typical OCR gear list?
Traction shoes (not standard trainers), sport tape for grip protection, hydration pack or belt, gloves for rope and rig obstacles, and a small towel. Avoid cotton. Avoid anything loose on your body that can snag on barbed wire or cargo netting.
How should I train grip, carries, and obstacle technique?
Grip work first — dead hangs, farmer carries, plate pinches, rope climbs weekly. Layer in carries (sandbag long walks, bucket carries, keg carries). Add technique practice on rigs, walls, and spear throws 4–6 weeks out from race day.
How does OCR training differ from HYROX or CrossFit?
OCR is trail and terrain heavy — your run, your carry, your obstacle transition. HYROX is structured and run on flat indoor surfaces with fixed stations. CrossFit builds general fitness but rarely the long-duration endurance and obstacle-specific technique OCR demands.
